Waverly-Shell Rock updating high school bathrooms, elevator for ADA-compliance

Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier - 4/18/2024

Apr. 18—WAVERLY — Waverly-Shell Rock High School will be more accessible next school year.

The Board of Education approved a $985,305 project Monday during a special meeting to upgrade the school's bathrooms and elevator to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Existing office space will be converted into a restroom that is large enough to accommodate an adult-sized changing table. Superintendent Ed Klamfoth said none of the current restrooms are large enough to do so without taking away stalls.

Eight existing restrooms at the ends of the academic hallways on both floors will also be updated with new sinks, toilets and urinals. These will also be ADA-compliant.

The project will also enlarge the building's elevator to accommodate individuals using large walkers or wheelchairs.

The money will come from the Waverly-Shell Rock Schools' Physical Plant and Equipment Levy. Construction will be completed by Steege Construction of Waverly, the only bidder on the project.

The updates will be completed this summer.
