Franciscan Health offering National Lung Screening Day scans
Times - 11/3/2023
Nov. 2—Franciscan Health is offering scans on National Lung Screening Day.
People can pay $49 on Nov. 11 for the non-invasive computer tomography screenings, which involve a minimal amount of radiation. They can get the scans at Crown Point, Michigan City, Munster, Olympia Fields and Rensselaer if they're over 50 years old, smoked at least a pack of cigarettes every day for 20 years and have no symptoms of lung cancer.
The lung cancer survival rate is 92% when caught in the earliest stages but early detection is crucial as it kills more people than breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer combined, according to the American Cancer Society.
People can call 1-866-600-1919 to schedule an appointment if they qualify.
Franciscan also is offering patients at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields a chance for early lung cancer detection with its newly installed Ion robotic bronchoscopy platform. A physician uses robotic bronchoscopy to guide an ultra-thin catheter with a camera deep into the lung in a minimally invasive biopsy of any tumors that need to be investigated.
"The Ion robotic bronchoscopy is yet another state-of-the-art technology offered to our patients right here in Olympia Fields," Franciscan Health Olympia Fields President and CEO Raymond Grady said. "This cutting-edge procedure is just one of many offered by our multidisciplinary team that allows our patients to receive exceptional, compassionate care with the comfort and peace of mind of being close to home."
It's also available in Crown Point and Michigan City. The goal to to get a cancer diagnosis as quickly as possible, which accelerates treatment and can potentially result in better outcomes if it's still in the early stages.
Bradley Coolidge, a Specialty Physicians of Illinois pulmonologist, recently performed the first Ion robotic bronchoscopy at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields.
"The Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy platform is state-of-the-art technology that results in earlier diagnosis of lung cancer," Coolidge said. "With earlier diagnosis, lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women, becomes much more curable. We are truly blessed to be one of the first to be able to offer this amazing technology to the people of south suburban Chicago".
