The worst & best nursing homes in the Triangle, based on federal government data

North Carolina is getting older.

More than 100,000 North Carolinians have turned 65 every year since 2011, and the trend is set to "continue well into the future," according to Carolina Demography, part of the Carolina Population Center at UNC-Chapel Hill. By 2029, Carolina Demography predicts, one in five North Carolinians will be at least 65 years old.

With the state's aging population comes a need for quality elder and senior care, both in and outside of the home.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), part of the federal Department of Health and Human Services, maintains a list and rating system of CMS-certified nursing homes around the country. The ratings are based on quality measures, such as whether "residents have gotten their flu shots, are in pain, had one or more falls that resulted in a major injury, or are losing weight."

"By comparing scores, you can see how nursing homes may be different from each other," CMS says.

The ratings were last updated in December. In all, about 420 nursing homes in North Carolina have ratings listed by CMS. More than 120 received one star, characterized as "much below average," while 61 received five stars, characterized as "much above average."
