Athletes of all ages, abilities join DisABILITY Sports Festival at Cal State San Bernardino

Oct. 07--Athletes of all ages and abilities gathered Saturday, Oct. 6, for the annual DisABILITY Sports Festival at Cal State San Bernardino.

The event, featuring appearances by former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dennis Powell and wheelchair motocross world champion Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham, gave participants a chance to compete in a couple dozen sports including archery, wheelchair and standing basketball, tennis, soccer, wall climbing, skateboarding, swimming and hand cycling.

Participants learned about adapted fencing at a new Light Saber Academy featuring Imperial Stormtroopers and Jedi Knights. Wheelchair motocross (WCMX), which is similar to bicycle motocross (BMX), Bubble Yoga and Blind Soccer also debuted at the all-day festival at CSUSB's Coussoulis Arena.

Originally established by Aaron Moffett, a CSUSB professor of kinesiology, the festival was designed to increase athletic opportunities for anyone with disabilities. Since the first event in 2006, the festival has grown into one of the country's largest cross ability events for people with any disability, according to CSUSB.
