Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Abilene Reflector-Chroncle - 10/5/2018

Oct. 04--Feeling in the pink?

Abilene has you covered.

Two events are planned this week and next to observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Abilene.

A 5K run and 2-mile fun walk Saturday will raise funds for Impact the Cure, sponsored by Impact Sports and Fitness.

Race registration will start at 7 a.m. with survivors recognized at 7:45. Cost to register is $20, or $25 the day of the race. Prizes will be given for the 5K race.

The fun walk is not competitive, with no awards given.

Races and other activities start and end at Impact Sports and Fitness, 418 N. Broadway.

Kids races are free to enter and will start at 8:45. Other activities include face painting and a photo booth.

Even dogs can get into the act, with wiener dog races at 9. Entry fee is $5.

A pancake breakfast and other activities will follow the races, including information and vendor booths.

Call 263-3888 for more information.

Proceeds will benefit local breast health initiatives, providing free mammograms for uninsured men and women of Dickinson County and contributing toward the purchase of a new 3D mammography system for Memorial Hospital.

The machine was installed Sept. 25, said Billy Hansen, marketing manager at Memorial Hospital. The $325,000 price for purchase, training and software is being funded by donations, CEO Harold Courtois said in an Aug. 15 story in the Reflector-Chronicle.

For "fun, fellowship and fundraising," plan to attend the 10th annual Hope Lives, sponsored by Holm Automotive Center, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Sterl Hall, said Brenda Holm, chairwoman of the Hope Lives committee.

"This is 10 years of the community working together," Holm said.

She said about 200 women have attended the event in past years, and she hopes more will this year.

This year's speaker will be Joan "Joanie" Hayden, who was diagnosed with early Stage 1 breast cancer in 2010 and chose a double mastectomy as part of her treatment, Holm said.

Hayden will speak on "The 'F' Words of Wellness."

She has taught physical education in Junction City schools for 31 years. She has co-managed the Chapman pool for the past three years and taught swimming and water safety classes.

Other Hope Lives activities include food, drinks, music, a raffle and a silent auction.

Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at Holm Automotive Center or from Hope Lives committee members, Holm said. Call 263-4000 for more information.

Over the past nine years, Hope Lives, Holm Automotive and the community have donated $66,500 to Impact the Cure's free mammogram services and the Elsie Brook Cancer Fund of Dickinson County.

According to information provided by Memorial Hospital, the hospital has provided 102 free mammograms through funds raised by Impact the Cure and Hope Lives.

Patients can call Memorial Hospital and ask for radiology to schedule a mammogram, Holm said.

The 3D mammograms are more comfortable and more accurate than 2D mammograms, according to the hospital.

Right now, patients who choose 3D over 2D are asked to pay the difference in costs. Insurance companies will be required to pay full cost of the 3D version beginning in January.
