BRIEF: Weld County Commissioners recognize residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities with proclamation

Oct. 04--The Board of Weld County Commissioners recognized the hundreds of residents who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities by proclaiming October as Residents' Rights Month, according to a news release.

Residents' rights, guaranteed by the federal 1987 Nursing Home Reform Law, requires nursing homes to care for residents by promoting quality of life and ensuring dignity and self-determination.

According to the release, the rights of more than 800 residents living in eight nursing homes and 850 people in 25 assisted living facilities are promoted by the Long-Term Care Ombudsman through the Department of Human Services' Area Agency on Aging. In honor of Residents' Rights Month, the agency debuted a YouTube video and brochure to focus on dignity, respect and the rights of long-term care residents.

"Growing older is a process that should be both celebrated and advocated, not just this month, but every day of the year," said Weld County Commissioner Julie Cozad, who is also a member of the Colorado Commission on Aging.
