Alzheimers Walk set for Sunday

Sept. 28--COLUMBUS -- Hundreds of Bartholomew, Decatur, Ripley, Rush, Shelby and Jackson County residents will unite Sunday at Mill Race Center to reclaim the future for millions at the Alzheimer's Association's Walk to End Alzheimer's.

In 2017, the Columbus event raised more than $96,000 contributing to more than $57.2 million raised nationwide for care, support and research efforts for those impacted by Alzheimer's.

The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Starting in 1989, the Alzheimer's Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk; now the Alzheimer's Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer's.

Walk to End Alzheimer's participants will learn about Alzheimer's disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical trial enrollment, support programs and services.

Walk participants will also join in a meaningful tribute ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease.

On walk day, each participant will receive a wristband. Each registered walker with a wristband will receive a Promise Garden flower and should choose the color that best represents their connection to the disease.

Blue represents someone with Alzheimer's or dementia, purple is for someone who has lost a loved one to the disease, yellow represents someone who is currently supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer's, and orange is for everyone who supports the cause and vision of a world without Alzheimer's.

Registration for the walk begins at noon. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 1:15 p.m. and the walk will begin immediately thereafter.

Participants should enter Mill Race Park off Lindsey Street.

Limited parking will be available at Mill Race Center, with additional parking available in Mill Race Park and the north end of the Cummins parking lot.

Participants may choose to walk either a one or three-mile route through the park.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a leash at all times. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.

Water will be provided and set-up on route.

The Walk to End Alzheimer's is an all-weather event. Those involved walk rain or shine, so come prepared.

Pre-registration for the Walk ends at noon today. If your teammates are not registered on-line (act.alz.org/site/TR/Walk2018) by this time, they will need to fill out a registration form at the Walk.
