Historical eras celebrated during Nursing Home Week

The Anniston Star - 5/16/2018

May 16--HEFLIN -- Everyone was having a roaring good time at the Cleburne County Nursing Home on Tuesday afternoon. Laughter and the familiar chords of the Charleston filled the halls as residents and staff celebrated day two of Nursing Home Week -- Tuesday's theme was the era of American history known as the Roaring '20s.

Nursing home administrator Tony Culberson was busy talking to the 30 or so residents gathered around one of the nurses' stations. Employees were dressed up like flapper girls dancing with the residents.

"Everything is going wonderful. Full staff participation, residents and sponsors. Today coupled with yesterday -- we're just really celebrating nursing home week -- in a big way," Culberson said.

On Monday the week kicked off with a 1950s theme and a parade featuring vintage cars. Heflin Mayor Rudy Rooks spoke.

Culberson said each day has a special theme and Wednesday the theme will be the seventies and Thursday the residents will enjoy a '80's themed bash.

On Friday everyone will wear special T-shirts and the residents will be treated to a cookout.

RN supervisor Kristina Daniel posed for photos with fellow flapper girl staffers while sipping faux champagne. Daniel said this is the biggest week of the year for the nursing home.

"This is our time to spend time with our residents and give them just a little vacation if you will," Daniel said.

"They're my family -- I'm from this county and so I'm very passionate about this facility and the residents in it. I love taking care of them," said Daniel.

Resident Ruth Hiett, 97, was smoking a candy cigarette enjoying the festivities. Hiett said she remembers life as a little girl in the 1920's.

"We chopped and picked cotton. I would go swimming in the creek. I was a grown woman before I remembered electricity," Hiett said as she dragged on the candy confection like it was lit.

"My mother died when I was two. I don't remember her. I hope someday to see her," Hiett said.
