Yonkers Creates First Responders Disability Registry

Yonkers Rising - 4/7/2018

Mayor Mike Spano, along with the Yonkers police and fire departments and members of the mayor's Disability Advisory Board, recently announced the launch of the city's first First Responders Disability Registry. The registry features specialized information to be accessed, with alerts, to Yonkers police and fire departments and EMS services in the event of an emergency located at the home of a person with special needs.

"Yonkers' First Responders Disability Registry is our opportunity to better service a growing population in our city," said Spano. "I applaud our Disability Advisory Board for recommending a program that will provide added comfort and peace of mind during those precious moments during an emergency."

The registry looks to eliminate or lessen emotional trauma, fear and conflict when first responders enter homes of those with special needs. Enrollment in the registry is dependent upon self-reporting. Disabilities to register may include physical and medical challenges; developmental challenges, mental illness and post-traumatic stress disorder; vision and hearing challenges; and age, language barriers, hoarders, service animals, etc.

"Mayor Spano charged our board to identify and respond to concerns affecting Yonkers citizens with disabilities," said Gene Minkow, Disability Advisory Board chairperson. "We believe this new program helps us to fulfill that mission. First Responders Disability Registry is vital, and it just makes sense."

Enrollment forms are available at Yonkers public libraries, Yonkers City Hall and online. Residents with questions should email mdab. yonkers@gmail.com.
