Chicago Tribune - 2/13/2018

Feb. 13--At least one person was rescued after an extra-alarm fire hit a Black Hebrew temple in the Grand Crossing neighborhood Monday night, authorities said.

No one was injured in the 2-11 alarm fire in the two-story brick building at 7130 S. South Chicago Ave., which started a little before 9 p.m., according to the Chicago Fire Department's media office. The House of Israel Temple of Faith, a Black Hebrew temple, is listed at the address.

A person with a disability was rescued from the second floor of the building, according to the Fire Department.

A girl with a disability was rescued from the top of the stairs inside the building, according to authorities at the scene. She, like the other two people inside, weren't harmed.

Firefighters were pouring water on the two-story brick building from at least four hose lines.

Photos from the scene showed heavy fire throughout the building, and the fire had broken through the building's roof, according to the Fire Department.

Heavy smoke billowed overhead as firefighters battled the blaze about 9:50 p.m. Utility companies were arriving on scene to help.

Police were keeping onlookers about a block away from the active fire site.
