Prostate On-Site Project 'POP' to hold prostate cancer screenings in Peoria

Prostate On-Site Project, a medical mobile service, will be providing affordable prostate cancer screenings to men 40 years and older, or younger, if a history of prostate cancer runs in the family.

Prostate cancer frequently presents itself without any signs, or symptoms. One in six men will develop the disease in their lifetime; if detected early, the course of treatment is less evasive and survival is nearly 100 percent possible.

Screenings will take place Nov. 30 in two locations:

6 to 8 a.m. at Municipal Operations Center (MOC), 8850 N. 79th Ave.

9 to 11 a.m. at City Hall, 8401 W. Monroe St.

Times may be extended, or shortened as needed, due to participation. Space is limited, so individuals should sign up early. PSA (prostate specific antigen), a non-fasting blood test, DRE (digital rectal exam), testicular exam and physician consultation will be conducted by a board certified urologist.

Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Health Net, and United Health Care insurance are accepted; specialist co-pay fees may apply. Medicare is not covered. Special rates are extended to City of Glendale men, and free to state-benefit-eligible employees and their spouses. If no insurance, the fee is $81 per screening.

Who should participate?

- All men 40 years of age or older should have an annual screening.

- Men with a family history of prostate cancer and African-American men should have a DRE and PSA test annually, starting at age 35.
