84 sites to participate in Summer Food Service

Volusia County's Human Services Office is sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program for children at 84 sites from June 5 through Aug. 11.

The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides nutritionally balanced meals regardless of race, color, sex, disability or national origin during summer vacation when school breakfasts and lunches are not available. All children age 18 and younger are eligible for meals at no charge, and there will be no discrimination in meal service. The programs are approved only for geographical areas where 50 percent or more of the children qualify for free and reduced-price meals during the school year

County seeks advisory board applicants

The Volusia County Council is seeking applicants for positions on three advisory boards that research and make recommendations on topics affecting the community.

A licensed electrical contractor is needed to serve on the Contractor Licensing and Construction Appeals Board. The Children and Families Advisory Board is looking for applicants from West Volusia and County Council districts four and five. The Personnel Board, which acts as an independent forum in hiring appeals, also is requesting applicants.

Port Orange library offers free computer classes

Adults can pick up new computer skills during free classes at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle.

The final class in May will be Advanced Microsoft Word from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30.

Participants are asked to bring fully charged laptops or other portable computing devices if they have them. The library has free Wi-Fi throughout the building.

Port Orange police seeking volunteers

The Port Orange Volunteers in Police Service are looking for new members.

VIPS supports the Port Orange Police Department by conducting vacation house watch checks, traffic control at accidents and city functions, distribution of animal traps, bicycle registration and child fingerprinting. They also provide clerical and courier services for the Police Department.

Participants must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid drivers license.

Funds available for homeless emergency services

Nonprofit organizations that provide emergency services to homeless persons in Volusia County may apply for funding from the Emergency Shelter Grant program.

The anticipated funds, which are estimated at $153,603, will be provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for fiscal year 2017-18 and are administered locally by Volusia County's Community Assistance Division.

The funds must be used for the implementation of a rapid rehousing and/or homelessness prevention program. Selected organizations will be required to provide a 100 percent match.

County plans Explore Volusia programs

Learn about Volusia County's conservation lands and land management practices during free Explore Volusia programs in May.

Upcoming events include:

?Eco-buggy tour of Lake George: 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 31. Explore the pine flatwoods, cypress swamps and marsh of the Lake George Forest and Wildlife Conservation Area aboard Volusia County's eco-buggy. Meet at 998 Ninemile Point Road.

Participants should bring water and insect repellent, and wear comfortable clothes and hiking or walking shoes.

Rejuvenate Ridgewood with spring clean up

The Port Orange-South Daytona Chamber of Commerce, The Rotary Club of Port Orange-South Daytona and the City of Port Orange will host a spring clean-up day from 8 a.m. To noon Saturday, June 3, along the Ridgewood Avenue Corridor, starting at the intersection of Dunlawton and Ridgewood Avenues south to Rose Bay.

All items are to be placed curbside or withing five feet of the pavement edge separated into four piles: yard waste, garbage, furniture and appliances.

Items considered hazardous including motor oil, used paint, Sharps, cooking oil or electronics will not be collected.

Learn about Agatha Christie's real-life mystery

Irene Curran, a retired teacher from New Jersey, will share insights into Agatha Christie's life at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle.

Ms. Christie, who wrote more than 80 mystery novels, created her own mystery when she disappeared for 11 days in December 1926. Her disappearance sparked worldwide headlines and prompted an unprecedented manhunt that involved hundreds of policemen and thousands of volunteers.

She was found in a spa hotel and claimed to have no memory of the previous 11 days.

Ms. Curran will discuss the disappearance along with Christie's life and novels.
