Thumbs up - Feds OK veterans nursing home in PSL

Stuart News - 5/20/2017

Its arrival was delayed, but common sense finally prevailed among bureaucrats overseeing the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans Nursing Home in Port St. Lucie.

Construction plans can proceed now that the federal Department of Veterans Affairs has agreed to a logical change of its building requirements to allow state-owned nursing homes to follow state building guidelines. The decision will enable the state to remain close to its existing blueprint and reduce construction costs from $54 million to $39 million.

The 120-bed facility, the seventh veterans nursing home in Florida, is expected to serve veterans from St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River, Okeechobee and Highlands counties and parts of Brevard, Glades, Polk, Palm Beach, Hendry and Osceola counties.

It will be a welcomed addition to Port St. Lucie and the Treasure Coast as a whole.
