Homicide ruled in death of man hit in head with chair at nursing home

Chicago Tribune - 4/20/2017

April 20--The death of a 71-year-old man 10 months after police say an "irate"man hit him in the head with a chair at a West Side hospital care facility has been ruled a homicide.

Timothy Everett died Tuesday of complications of remote cerebral injuries and blunt force trauma to the head following an incident at 1550 S. Albany Ave., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Following an autopsy, the office Wednesday ruled Everett's death a homicide.

Officers responded to a nursing home in the 1500 block of South Albany Avenue on June 7, 2016, at about 10:45 a.m. after Everett was hit with a chair by a man in his 30s who was "irate over care,'' according to Chicago police.

When officers arrived, Everett had lost consciousness and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Everett was pronounced dead Tuesday at 8 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office. He had been living at another medical rehabilitation center in Oak Lawn since the incident.

Last month, Nicholas Brown, 32, was arrested at his home in west suburban Bellwood by Chicago police officers on a fugitive apprehension team, initially on a charge of aggravated battery to a senior citizen, according to police. He's since been charged with attempted murder, according to court records.

Brown remains in custody after being booked into Cook County Jail on March 17 when a judge set bail at $150,000, according to the Cook County sheriff's office. His next court date is listed as May 25.

A spokesperson for the nursing home on Albany Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood was not immediately available.
