World reporter among recipients of Oklahoma DHS award

Tulsa World - 10/20/2016

A Tulsa World reporter was recognized Tuesday as a recipient of the 2016 Governor's Disability Employment Awards of Excellence.

Jimmie Tramel is a pop culture blogger and feature writer for the Scene department at the Tulsa World, where he previously spent 24 years as a sports writer.

Tramel received the award at the Governor's Mansion in Oklahoma City after Laura Cope, an employee of state Department of Human Services Developmental Disabilities Services, nominated him for his reporting in an Aug. 21 story about a man who has been honored for his love of car washes.

"Rarely do the media portray positive stories of DHS clients with such in-depth research and compassion," the awards ceremony program states about Tramel's story. "? Many employees commented on what a positive story it was and that it was nice to be reminded of why they do the work they do. The story also portrayed Brian as an everyday individual, not a person with a disability."

The awards are given each year to outstanding employees with disabilities, to businesses that hire people with disabilities and to members of the media or media organizations that publicize them.

In addition to DHS, the awards are sponsored by the Office of the Governor, the state Department of Rehabilitation Services and the Oklahoma Association of People Supporting Employment First.
