BRIEF: Coming Aug. 2: 'Failing the Frail' to show findings of 6-month look at Pa. nursing homes

Patriot-News (Harrisburg, PA) - 7/27/2016

July 27--Auditor General Eugene DePasquale on Tuesday released an audit that found problems in how Pennsylvania oversees its nursing home industry.

Among its major findings, the audit found that the state wasn't adequately ensuring that nursing homes were meeting minimum staffing requirements and that the state appeared to be failing to fine nursing homes in certain instances where it was warranted.

But that's only part of the story. PennLive reporters Daniel Simmons-Ritchie and David Wenner spent the past six month reviewing hundreds of inspection reports, uncovering dozens of care-related deaths in Pennsylvania nursing homes.

They interviewed more than 60 experts, advocates, government and industry officials and found a lack of state oversight that can allow nursing homes to put profit over care.

Starting Tuesday, PennLive will disclose its findings in a series "Failing the Frail," that will identify the multitude of problems in a state that has the 10th highest rate of bad nursing homes in the nation according to a prominent government rating system.
