Lifestyle changes can help prevent Type 2 diabetes

July 06--The University of Florida/Marion County Extension Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have teamed up to offer the National Diabetes Prevention Program to adults, who have been screened by their doctor and diagnosed as prediabetic, a condition in which blood sugar levels are abnormally elevated but below the criteria for diabetes.

Participants will attend healthy eating/physical activity coaching for 16 weeks, and then have monthly maintenance sessions for six month.

The free classes will meet from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Thursdays beginning July 16 at the extension service facility, 2232 N.E. Jacksonville Road, Ocala.

Prediabetes is treatable. However, left untreated up to one-third of people with prediabetes will progress to diabetes within five years, according to the CDC website.

Widowed persons luncheons

--The Leesburg LIFE, a social-support group for widowed persons, will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Leesburg Community Building, 109 E. Dixie Ave. Entertainment will be provided by the Woodlands Karaoke Singers, who will perform songs by Eddy Arnold, Judy Garland, Patsy Cline, Elvis, Bill Haley, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, the Carpenters and Diana Ross, after the buffet-style lunch. Cost is $10.

--The Eustis LIFE will meet at 11:30 a.m.July 15 at the Eustis Golden Corral Buffet and Grill, 15810 U.S. Highway 441. The buffet includes dessert. Entertainment will be the comedic stylings of Rick Reed, director of LIFE.

NVI's 10{+t}{+h} anniversary

New Vision for Independence, a nonprofit that provides assistance and training for blind and visually impaired individuals in Lake and Sumter counties, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a party from 5:30 to 7 p.m.July 14 at Tavares Pavilion on the Lake, 200 S. Disston Ave.

The free event, which is open to the public, is sponsored by Lake Eye Associates. To help celebrate the event the chambers of commerce in Eustis, Lady Lake, Leesburg, Mount Dora, South Lake and Tavares, will hold a ribbon cutting.

There will be dessert and a cash bar.

Free seminar

Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Leesburg will host a free dinner and seminar on planning a funeral at 6 p.m.July 13 at the Leesburg AMVETS Post 2006 post, 500 N. Canal St.

Jim Davis, executive director for Hillcrest, will present the open forum. Topics will include support, funeral and memorial services, benefits, insurance, and veterans services.

The public is invited. Seating is limited. Participants should check in around 5:45 p.m.

Cancer lecture

Colleen Carter, a registered nurse and professor of nursing at Lake-Sumter State College, will present "Cancer, Survivorship and Celebrating Birthdays" at 10 a.m.July 15 in Room 108B at Cooper Memorial Library, 2525 Oakley Seaver Drive, Clermont.

The free lecture will include topics on cancer, treatment, good nutrition, positive thinking and how to celebrate being a survivor.

Horse-riding club

DreamCatcher Horse Ranch and Rescue Center in Clermont, a nonprofit center that rescues and rehabilitates horses in need, offers a women's horse-riding club from 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday at its facility, 10639 Toad Road. Beginners to experienced riders are welcome.

Activities will include grooming, tacking, riding lessons (English or western) and trail riding. Cost is $30 a session.
