Scott student 2014 disability history contest winner

Coal Valley News (Madison, WV) - 5/21/2015

May 19--The Disability History Essay Contest committee is proud to announce the District 1 First Place Winner of the 2014 Disability History Essay Contest in West Virginia.

District 1 includes the following counties: Boone, Calhoun, Clay, Jackson, Kanawha, Mason, Putnam, and Roane.

This contest was designed to reinforce Disability History Week and to provide high school seniors an opportunity to showcase their writing skills and knowledge of the Disability Rights Movement. Entries were received from high school seniors throughout West Virginia.

Unmarked entries were provided to a committee of judges to be ranked. After each judge read and ranked the anonymous entries, a meeting was held to vote on and identify the prize winning essays.

The District 1 First Place Winner is Nicholas Paitsel, son of Sheila and Donald Paitsel from Danville. Nicholas will be presented with a cash prize of $1,000 at the Scott High School Senior Awards Ceremony, May 29, at 1 p.m. at the high school. His essay will be published in the WVSILC Special Edition newsletter and on our website at wvsilc.org.

The required essay topic was: "Discuss the opportunities for people with disabilities that have evolved from the Disability Rights Movement."

"This contest is an important way to increase knowledge and understanding of the disability rights movement while providing high school seniors with a chance to earn cash prizes.", says Ann McDaniel, Executive Director of the WV Statewide Independent Living Council. "Nicholas' entry detailed the history of and progress made by the disability rights movement, as well as the challenges still facing that movement to ensure every individual with disabilities has equal rights in all aspects of their lives and to achieve their own goals.", McDaniel continued.

The Disability History Essay Contest is a collaborative effort of the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services, Statewide Independent Living Council, and State Rehabilitation Council, with cooperation from the West Virginia Department of Education and the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts.
