Disability advocate to volunteer at annual mud run

Gainesville Daily Register (TX) - 5/5/2015

May 02--Recently crowned Ms. Wheelchair Texas USA, Skylar Conover from Allen will put aside her crown for a day while volunteering at the fourth annual M-o-o-ving Thru the Mud with Landon May 16, benefiting children with brain lesions. This mud event for children, ages 4 to 15 will be held at the Circle N Dairy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Conover received the Texas USA title in February, impressing the judges with her outstanding advocacy for the disabled community and by her positive attitude in life.

At the age of 15, Conover was diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, going from a stellar athlete in many areas ranging from cheerleading and any sport involving a ball to a wheelchair that she refused to let define her life.

Conover graduated with honors from the University of North Texas (UNT), with a double major in rehabilitation studies and substance abuse and addictions. She also holds an associates of arts in sign language, continuing her education at UNT to receive her masters of science in rehabilitation counseling in order to pursue her dream of helping others with disabilities adjust to life and accepting themselves.

She continues to be involved in many adaptive sports such as water skiing, hockey, rugby and soccer.

Her passion is to educate those around her to empower those who are different.

The mission of Ms. Wheelchair America is to provide opportunities of achievement for women who happen to be wheelchair users to successfully educate and act as advocates for the more than 54 million Americans living with disabilities.

It is not a contest to select the most attractive individual, it is a competition based on advocacy, achievement, communication and presentation to select the most accomplished and articulate spokeswoman for persons with disabilities. Communication of the needs and accomplishments of those with disabilities is of paramount importance.

Promoting glamour, self-confidence and community service, Ms. Wheelchair's mission celebrates the achievements of women with disabilities.

Conover will travel to Ohio in July to compete for the title of Ms. Wheelchair USA. Her motto is "Alter Attitudes to Conquer Change."

Regarding the upcoming mud event in Cooke County Conover said, "I am excited to get down and muddy Texas style, raising awareness for a great cause while promoting education in the community about visible and invisible disabilities."
