BRIEF: 'Virtual Dementia Tour' simulates dementia challenges

Sept. 26--Del Mar College faculty and students will try their hand at a virtual dementia tour Friday, according to the college news release.

Nursing faculty and students on the college's West Campus will simulate dementia and disabilities associated with the disease during the event.

Participants will wear gear, such as gloves and headphone that play continuous noise, while also completing tasks such as folding clothes and setting a table in an allotted amount of time.

In addition, lights will be out and a strobe light will be on during the sessions in a room furnished like a studio apartment.

The activity is part of a college nine-week course, called Dementia and Caregiver Stress. The course began Sept. 11, college officials said.

College officials said one in four people older than 65 have a form of dementia.

Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of the disease, affects the as many as 5 million Americans, according to the National Institute on Aging.
