Family 2 Family Center links families of children with special health care needs to health information

Jackson Advocate - 4/24/2014

JANS - Parents of children and youth with special health care needs in Mississippi can get the information they seek about health resources, services and supports for their children and family through the Mississippi Family 2 Family Health Information and Education Center.

The Family 2 Family Center is family-focused, family-managed and works to empower the families of children with special health care needs to be partners in the decision making concerning the health of their children. Information is focused on community resources, medical home, public and private insurance, education, and transition to adulthood. Parents can also join a monthly emailed list-serv and participate in webinars.

Innovative health information, including information resulting from the Affordable Care Act, is available to families statewide via the telephone and at the Family 2 Family Center.

Jacqueline Washington, parent coordinator for the Family 2 Family Center, is the parent of a child with a disability. Washington is also the parent consultant for the Children's Medical Program's Blake Clinic at the Jackson Medical Mall.

The Institute for Disability Studies administers the Family 2 Family Center. "The Family 2 Family Center assists families of children with special health care needs to make informed choices about their children's health care that not only promote good treatment decisions for their child but are cost effective for their family," said Royal Walker, executive director of the Institute.

The Family 2 Family Center is Mississippi'sFamily-to-Family Health Information Center (F2F HIC) funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration (URSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. F2F HICs are statewide, parent-run information and referral centers located in all states. Mississippi's Family 2 Family Center is a collaboration of the Children's Medical Program (CMP) of the Mississippi State Department of Health and the University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies.
