BRIEF: $254,000 in federal grant money improves three Modesto parks

Modesto Bee (CA) - 4/19/2014

April 19--MODESTO -- The playgrounds at three Modesto parks have new slides, swings, jungle gyms and other equipment after the city spent about $254,000 in federal grant money to replace outdated equipment and make them more accessible for people with disabilities.

The playgrounds at Sipherd, Mellis and Cesar Chavez parks reopened Friday after being closed for about a month for the work. The project included making two of the playgrounds comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act by replacing the sand with wheelchair-friendly wood chips. The wood chips also reduce injuries from falls.

The Cesar Chavez Park playground already had wood chips, but more were installed.

Funding came from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grants. The funding is for projects that help people with disabilities and low to moderate incomes. The upgrade at Sipherd includes a swing that accommodates children in wheelchairs.
